Stayed there for a weeks diving and could not have been happier. Great location in the middle of a marine park 30 minutes boat ride from Selekan. Eco setting... read more of a few wood chalets on stilts into the sea. Very comfortable. Water supply to the resort in collected rain water. Electricity is from solar panels at the rear. Regretably no hot water on site. However food and diving superb and most important is the staff were so welcoming and helpfull. They really made our stay special.. We were concerned about the security situation for tourists but were reassured by the strong military presence on the islands. All round great holiday.
I willload photos. Hope you like my review. Thanks for reading the detail. More

Positives
- Location - Located a short boat ride away from Bohey Dulang and Sibuan; this is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Selekan Island itself is not as beautiful as it's neighboring islands, but has a unique culture and friendly island village that is worth exploring during your downtime.

The dock has a ladder into the water and we put our drying rack out there as well. Each of our rooms also had a larger dock that extended out over the water and during high tides, our kids loved jumping off the dock into the water.
- Food - I loved the food each meal and would put it as a plus. However, if you're children are a bit picky (like my 5 year old), this place will pose some challenges. We packed lots of extra snacks and it was just fine.
- Atmosphere - The place is just really chill. We met some really nice people there - staff and other guests - and enjoyed spending part of our evening just chatting, playing the ukelele over the water, having a few beers (you have to bring your own), and playing board games.
Cons -
- Room furniture - The room is a decent size. It seems like it wouldn't be too much to have them make some more shelves, or nightstands, or desks, or hangers. With a family of five, we needed more space to put our stuff.
- Itinerary Details - When you stay at Luma, you are right in the middle of the Semporna Islands and have easy and quick access to some really amazing places. We liked that we essentially had a boat and driver to ourselves each day. For example, one day, we were forced to leave Sibuan Island early because of an approaching thunderstorm; when the rain cleared, we asked if we could go to a different nearby island to explore the Bajau Laut culture and check out the beaches even though our island tour was essentially over for that day; the were (mostly) happy to accommodate this request. The reason, then, that this part ends up in the negative section was because there was still quite a bit to be desired from our 3 night, 2 day package. I get the sense - from talking with the other guests - that this operation really does a great job hosting divers. Hosting families, it seems, still has some room for improvement. For starters, we purchased the island hopping itinerary, and we did not go to all of the islands that were listed on the itinerary. In fact, on the first day, they only brought us to one island (Sibuan) that was about 15 minutes away. This is not really what I had in mind when we were going to go island "hopping." On the second day, they had us go to Bohey Dulang Island for the famous hike. We were super excited. We got there, registered, and started the hike up the mountain, only to be told about 2 minutes into the hike that two of my children could not go to the top because they were too young. Our guides - two young locals - seemed to know this but never mentioned it on the way there. When I asked them what the others will do if I and my eldest daughter hiked to the top, they just said "wait." I did not want most of my family to just sit and wait for us, so we all decided to not do the hike. This was the thing I was most excited about on our island hopping tour, and now we were leaving because there was no planning. Why could the boat driver not take the three family members who were waiting and drive them five minutes to go snorkelling? Next up, we went to Mantabuan, and it was such a low tide that we couldn't really snorkel. Why bring a family of five to a snorkelling spot that can't be snorkelled? Needless to say, our second day was the low point of our trip to Semporna. The next day was a bit better but still with some hiccups.
Overall, if they could improve their itinerary and island hopping guides, this place would be an easy 5/5. More

Great place for your group privacy, since they said to remain small.
I have been to many dive destinations and met with too many divemasters (DM). But nothing quite like the one in Luma’... Selakan. Baik lain macam (in a good way of course) but can be so firm and grumpy when it comes to safety (which is great).
I never had a DM that taught me how to actually take a good photo under the water. I never had a DM that taught me how to edit the photos nicely. I never had a DM that helped me to shoot the subject when it’s getting tough under the water.
Most importantly, I never had a DM that sat down with me and taught me clearly how to maximise the utilisation of my underwater camera. Sharing knowledge is not everyone’s appetite. It is uncommon in today’s world.
Cause that’s not a DM’s job actually. But it’s absolutely amazing knowing that this kind of people still exist, still offering some good values to strangers. Like he had options to just keep his knowledge but he chose to share with me and other divers.
I invested for underwater camera solely for the memories. So my concept more towards try and error and asalkan sedap mata memandang sudah. But this guy really made me explore my own camera. Like this kindness still exist in today’s world? What are the odds!
Apart from the great DM, I am surprised and totally amazed with the creatures here. I didn’t expect that the creatures to be as good as Anilao.

A gem hidden in the Celebes Sea. This is how I should described it. From the moment I stepped on the pier of Luma... Selakan till the day I left after a 5-nights stay, I cannot but compliment their hospitality, service and attentiveness which were provided to the highest degree. The room (simple and clean, and yes, it is located on water), the food (tasty and different everyday), the fact that they told you to treat the place like home (you can even cook your own food if you want to), the seamless diving operation, not to mention the excellent guide cum spotter (the best so far I have had and yes, I have been diving in so many places outside Malaysia), and the fact that you can just chill out after dinner on the pier and the guide cum host will keep you company, what more could I ask for really? It's been over a month since I stayed at Luma' Selakan for a four days' snorkelling, and I am still wishing I could go... back right now. The accommodation was fantastic, not just because of the large, clean and comfy rooms, but the stunning location. Being able to sit quietly and watch the fish, coral and seastars beneath my feet under in the moonlight, or enjoy the sunrises and lightning storms rolling in over the mainland while I enjoyed a delicious meal and coffee was like a dream. Being out amongst the reefs instead of being based in Semporna meant you could spend more time snorkelling and feel like a part of the life out there.
Our host, Zul was incredible. He was so attentive, kind and patient and had so much to share in the biology and culture of the area. He has a passion for the ocean and you will come away with a shared sense of excitement and lots learnt. Zul's knowledge of the local reefs meant we were taken to ideal spots teaming with fish and other reef life including a diversity of healthy coral. We were also taken on some fantastic island hikes which I enjoyed a great deal.
We were very well looked after. The locally made meals were excellent and we were provided with all the gear to be comfortable snorkelling. You snorkel at your own pace and can wind down in the evening relaxing on the deck or having a swim straight from your bedroom.
There's no way I won't be returning to Luma' Selakan, I cannot recommend it enough!read more
Wow, what a great place to stay. Firstly, the communication and booking process prior to arrival was fantastic. Amin... is super easy to deal with and nothing was an issue for him. Airport pickup and transfer was seamless. Originally, went so my husband could do some diving, while the kids and I chilled, swam, snorkelled and relaxed. Unfortunately, due to a head cold, my husband was unable to dive, so we spent our whole time Island hoping and Snorkelling. Zul was an unbelievable guide, housekeeper, translator, local cultural advisor etc, etc. We had our 10 and 12 yo kids with us and Zul took a keen interest in sharing his knowledge and passion for the local marine environment. The local foods provided were fantastic. The little treats for the kids (and us) were fantastic. Plan is to get myself and the kids dive certified in the next few years and get back over there to explore a bit more of the undersea world. Having said that, we all would be happy to go back again and island hop and snorkel. Thanks again Luma’ Selakan for some very special lasting memories.read more

We came with 4 persons. 2 divers and 2 took OWD course.Beautiful place to dive and chill. Staff very friendly and... accomodating. Dive master’s are expert in macro hunting. We even had a chance to explore the nearby village and see agar-agar farm and buy seafood from Bajau people.Rooms are breezy at night with no air-conditioning needed. You can also rent a stand up paddle board if you want to.I reserve one star for future improvements:1) Punctuality. Instructor arrive to Island late (afternoon on the 2nd day we were there) then had to cram the OWD syllabus. I think it would have been better to at least give some reading materials to the students beforehand to fill up the lost time so that it is not too rushing.2) Faulty dive equipment ruined some of our dives thus scheduled equipment maintenance should be done. I apologize if this has already been done, maybe just a coincidence that the equipments happened to fail during one of the dive days as the previous day, the equipment was fine.-Regulator auto-inflate making it difficult for the diver to descend.-Alternate air source auto purges when entering the water causing diver to lose air before even starting the dive.Regardless, we would definitely come again if given the oportunity!read more
Its been 2 weeks since I came back from Luma' Selakan, and I've been thinking of you everyday. If only I could give a 7... star rating, I would!Came here with my 2 girlfriends with no expectations whatsoever. Have only seen a friend repeating coming here several times for her dive trips and thought, instead of going to typical/commercial areas, why not try it here.We basically just wanted to chill and relax since the 2 year lockdown kept us home and occupied with work, and decided to venture Sabah waters as we've never been to their islands before. And it is indeed the best decision we made this year! Stayed 4 days 3 nights, and wished we stayed longer.Location wise, it is very strategic, only 20-30 minutes boat ride from the main land/jetty. Luma's Selakan is the only resort at the Selakan island, and the view is breathtaking all day all night 24/7. Every rooms are sea facing, and guests are able to enjoy both sunsets and sunrise view. Rooms are basic, but very clean, comfortable, properly built and well ventilated. It is windy all the time and the sea breeze are refreshing. I realize from this trip that we are happy and content even with the most basic things in life. At night, we could stargaze and see the milky way. Beautiful!Food was served the local way 4 times a day, sitting on the floor on a low table, feasting together with other guests. Food is home cooked by villagers. Thought this is such a good way of supporting local villagers too. They were delicious. The best thing is, guests can cook too since they let us use the kitchen and fridge anytime. Do bring some groceries, coffees, teas on your own if you were to stay long here.We were so happy with our stay that we immediately booked for a 6 days trip in February 2023 and bought our flight tickets right away. Came back here again for the second time for one good reason - its Malaysian/ Sabahan hospitality!. Rooms were super... clean and should fit any island-goers for sure with private balcony to hang your wet clothes or hangout. Its a connected floating/ partial floating accommodation that allows you to hangout at their living area and yard as well. That makes it a plus point for big groups to hangout. They’ll make you feel at home even you are in a small group or alone.Food prepared was good as well and you can buy and cook yourself in their kitchen. There are Bajau or village fishermen selling cheap and sometimes live seafood caught nearby. Tip - If you intend to buy and cook, get their crew to negotiate (its super cheap even before you negotiate). You can get basic groceries within a walkable distance in the same island and mosque nearby too or just head back to Semporna by their boat which is just 30 mins away one way from Pulau Selakan.Known as the underwater macro heaven which undoubtedly is, you can ask for any custom trip to dive/snorkel at nearby islands (went to Timba timba, Mataking and Sipadan island). Dive crew and guide were super helpful - they’ll do almost everything for you except getting yourself in the boat. They’ve mastered the nearby dive site in Selakan Island and you should be safe. Dive sites in Selakan are definitely full of macros and healthy corals for you to capture with your camera. Their spotters are absolutely highly recommended, to the extend of sharing photography tips and trick to a noob like myself.Anyhow, this is not a paid review but an honest one ☝🏻. This would have cost us thousands, but Luma made it possible for us who are tight in our pockets :)Thank you for having us, will definitely be back for more.read more
- photo advertised is 100% as real condition- food was local, well above average- dive master is responsible, and is... good at photography (both under water macro/sea creature and photo for the guest!) - diving equipment is complete (long sleeve wet suit, BCD, regulator, mask, you might want to bring your own booties, torch, pointer) - perfect spot for both sunset and sunrise. - amazing for honeymoon - the island is right next to Boheydulang- you can bring your own beer, but please don’t over indulge and cause trouble, balance is the key.read more
Can't recommend enough. We stayed here for 4 days and 3 nights and wish I had stayed longer. The rooms are simple, but... spectacular, with amazing views to the ocean. You can snorkel right outside the room and you can see several animais (managed to spot nudibranches, shrimp, clown fish, small moray eels, puffer fish, sea snake and an array of other animals). The food is brought fresh everyday from the village and all the guests eat together, creating a quite homey environment. All the snorkeling/hiking/diving activities are well organised and care is put into them so crowds are avoided. We were always the first to arrive at the sites. Can't thank Zul (the dive master and our host) enough for the amazing companionship and care he received us with.We will return for sure.read more
